In my psych SOAPIE note, I showed leadership and accountability by organizing patient information, choosing appropriate nursing interventions, and evaluating using a holistic approach that looked at their emotional, mental, and overall well-being. In my PICOT poster, I focused on whether support groups and education help reduce stress in families of children with autism, which helped me think more about nursing care in a broader way that includes the patient, family, and community. In my soliloquy, I reflected on the emotional side of nursing and focused on empathy, compassion, and what both patients and nurses go through. Overall, these assignments show how I've grown in leadership, using evidence in practice, understanding families as a whole system, and seeing nursing as both a science and a human experience.

In my family thought paper, I used family systems thinking and nursing theory to look at how my own family experiences connect to patient care, and how culture, environment, and health affect the whole family, not just one person. In my PICOT presentation, I used research and scientific evidence to compare cup feeding with other feeding methods for newborns, which helped me think about using science and evidence to understand patient outcomes and improve care. In my synthesis paper, I used different ways of knowing in nursing, like ethics, personal experience, evidence, and caring, to understand how nurses make decisions and provide care in real situations. Overall, these assignments helped me grow in understanding how nursing theory, research, and different ways of knowing all connect to real patient care, and helped me become more confident in thinking like a nurse.

BSN-3A. The Heritage professional nurse utilizes effective written and oral communication and professional behaviors to foster shared decision-making and accountability among team members to optimize outcomes of care.
BSN-3B. The Heritage professional nurse integrates technological and mathematical knowledge to create a culture of quality and safety to prevent systems errors.
I have participated in Interprofessional education (IPE) activities with students from other health professions where we collaborated on a patient case review. In my worksheet, I reviewed the case and identified key concerns to discuss with my group. I was able to practice communication, teamwork, and professional behavior when working with other health professions and engage in collaborative decision making. In my quality improvement project, I looked at how better monitoring and early recognition of patient changes can help prevent serious complications and improve patient safety. It helped me understand how using data and quality improvement processes can reduce errors and improve outcomes in healthcare. Overall, these experiences strengthened my understanding of how collaboration, communication, and evidence-based practice are essential in providing safe and effective patient care.

BSN-4A. The Heritage professional nurse embodies professional values and responsibilities defined by the American Nurses Association’s Scope and Standards of Nursing Practice (ANA, 2015), Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (ANA, 2015), Nursing’s Social Policy Statement: The Essence of the Profession (ANA, 2010).
BSN-4B. The Heritage professional nurse assumes accountability for maintaining professional practice through self-reflection; and demonstrates continuous professional engagement and lifelong learning.
BSN-4C. The Heritage professional nurse demonstrates courage and resilience from practicing self-care as requisite for creating a culture of safe and effective nursing care.
In my ethics paper I used the ANA Code of Ethics and nursing standards to understand what it means to be a professional nurse and how ethical behavior guides nursing practice. I explained how nurses are responsible for acting with respect, honesty, accountability, and fairness when caring for patients. In my Novice to Expert paper, I reflected on how I developed from a beginner nursing student to someone who is building confidence and skills through experience and education. In my practicum self-reflection, I reflected on the importance of self-care and resilience. I learned that taking care of myself helps me stay focused, calm, and able to provide safe patient care. Overall, these assignments helped me understand professional responsibility, personal growth, and the importance of self-care in becoming a safe and effective nurse.

BSN-5A. The Heritage professional nurse participates in the policy processes impacting the health of individuals, families, communities and populations.
BSN-5B. The Heritage professional nurse works to increase access to care, especially for vulnerable populations, and to overcome social determinants of health.
BSN-5C. The Heritage professional nurse works to overcome barriers to the provision of culturally inclusive nursing care.
BSN-5D. The Heritage professional nurse expresses passion for sustainability and justice.
In my policy brief, I developed a recommendation for mental health screenings in elementary schools and used evidence to support a change in school health policy. In my public testimony I spoke to the Yakima School District Board and advocated for stronger mental health support in schools. In my PhotoVoice I identified barriers in Yakima, Washington and reflected on how culture and environment affect healthcare access and communication. In my journey to political activism paper I reflected on my experiences with voter engagement and speaking up for social justice through activities like get out the vote (GOTV), where I connected policy and community health. Overall, I actively engaged in policy work, advocacy, and community based projects that focused on improving health and addressing the needs in my community.
