My Philosophy Of Nursing

My philosophy of nursing is based on the belief that every person deserves care that supports their physical, emotional, and social well-being. I want to provide care for all patients, regardless of their background, and especially support those who may feel overlooked due to language, cultural, or systemic barriers. Growing up in a Hispanic agricultural community and learning through my education about health and the factors that influence it has shaped how I see nursing. This philosophy guides how I care for patients, helping me provide compassionate, safe, and fair care while empowering individuals and families to take an active role in their health. Knowing my beliefs as a nurse helps me make thoughtful decisions, stay true to my values, and grow as a professional while serving the needs of the people and communities I care for.

I believe that all human beings have the following basic needs, including food, shelter, a sense of belonging, safety, and the right to access quality health care. I believe that health encompasses more than physiological functioning but also includes emotional and environmental dimensions that significantly contribute to overall quality of life. I believe that for human beings to grow healthy and whole, all aspects of health must be acknowledged and addressed. I believe the environment plays a crucial role in promoting healing and supporting overall health through factors such as clean air, low stress, proper hygiene, and minimal exposure to harmful chemicals.

I believe the purpose of nursing is to provide care that addresses the emotional, psychological, and physical needs of patients, while advocating for their rights and overall well-being. Nurses contribute to the health of individuals, families, communities through prevention of illness, health education, and advocacy for equitable access to healthcare resources. I believe that an effective nursing care environment is one where communication is respected, collaboration is encouraged, and nurses are supported and valued as an essential member of the healthcare team. To further the health of patients, I will meet their needs by providing compassionate, holistic care that addresses their physical, emotional, and psychological well-being, while advocating and empowering them to participate in their own health decisions. I believe that nurses should demonstrate compassion, empathy, advocacy, critical thinking, and cultural awareness. These qualities help nurses provide care that meets the needs of patients and families, respects diverse backgrounds, and supports overall health and well-being.

I believe that nurses have a professional duty to provide ethical and compassionate care, treating patients with dignity and respect while adhering to scope of practice standards. Nurses are responsible for ensuring patient safety, delivering evidence-based care, upholding moral and ethical obligations, and taking accountability for their actions. They must also maintain their own health and contribute to the advancement of the profession through advocacy, policy development, and lifelong learning.

My philosophy aligns with the Heritage University BSN mission to advance the health of multicultural families and communities, particularly in underserved areas, through education, service, practice, and research. It reflects the American Nurses Association (ANA) code of Ethics, Scope and Standards of Nursing Practice, and Nursing Social Policy Statement, which emphasize patient-centered care, ethical practice, and advocacy for health equity. I also use the fundamental patterns of knowing to guide my practice. These frameworks inform my approach to care by combining evidence-based knowledge with compassion, cultural sensitivity, and a commitment to social justice.

I come from a small, low-income Hispanic agricultural community, where many families work on farms under challenging conditions. I care deeply about my community because our farm workers are often exposed to harsh chemicals, poor air quality, and face language and systemic barriers to healthcare. I was raised in the Lower Valley, where I witnessed my parents and neighbors navigate these barriers firsthand, experiencing limited access to care and mistrust rooted in historical policies. These experiences have shaped my commitment to culturally sensitive and socially just nursing practice.

I believe my education in sciences, social sciences, and humanities has strengthened my understanding of the biological, psychological, and social factors that influence health. It has also showed me the importance of providing holistic, patient-centered care. I believe knowledge of nursing is grounded in the fundamental patterns of knowing which include empirics, aesthetics, ethical, personal, and emancipatory knowing (Chinn et al., 2022). These patterns have guided me in providing care that is evidence-based, compassionate, culturally sensitive, ethically grounded, and focused on empowering patients and communities. I believe that I act in the spirit of inquiry when I consider the social, cultural, and environmental factors affecting health outcomes and look for solutions to address them.

My beliefs about human beings shape my nursing care by fostering cultural sensitivity, ethical decision-making, and an understanding of the diverse experiences and individualized needs of patients. I believe that nursing care is grounded in evidence-based practice, patient safety, and a commitment to doing what is best for the patient while honoring their values, preferences, and choices. My goal is for patients, families, and communities to be healthy and supported in all aspects of their lives. I want to empower them to take part in their healthcare by providing guidance, education, and advocacy. I also aim to help address challenges that affect health, such as access to care, language barriers, and environmental risks. Ultimately, I hope to build trust, promote long-term well-being, and advocate for health equity for the communities I serve.
